Greaseproof paper is a type of paper that is impermeable to oil or grease and is often used for food packaging or cooking. It is usually produced by refining base paper, resulting in a paper with very low porosity. The density is then further increased by hard calendering rolls (supercalendering), resulting in a paper called cellophane. Cellophane is made by filling the pores with starch, alginate or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in a pulp press, or by chemically treating the paper to make it resistant to oil. Basis weights are generally 30 - 90g/m2.
