Carbonless Paper, also known as NCR Paper, is a specialty coated paper designed to produce multiple copies of handwritten or printed information without using traditional carbon sheets. It relies on a precise chemical reaction between microcapsules and color developers to transfer images instantly under pressure.
Carbonless paper is manufactured with two primary coating systems:
CB (Coated Back): The reverse side is coated with microcapsules containing colorless dye (pigment oil).
CF (Coated Front): The front side is coated with a color developer that reacts with the dye.
CFB (Coated Front and Back): Combines both CB and CF functions.
SC (Self-Contained): Both the front and back are coated, enabling image transfer within a single sheet.
For a standard three-part NCR receipt or form, the structure is as follows:
Top Sheet (CB – Coated Back):
The back is coated with microcapsules. This sheet receives the original writing.
Middle Sheet (CFB – Coated Front & Back):
The front reacts with the dye from the top sheet, while the back transfers the image to the next sheet.
Bottom Sheet (CF – Coated Front):
The front is coated with a color developer and receives the final copy.
Only the middle sheet (CFB) performs both receiving and transferring functions. To prevent accidental image transfer caused by excessive pressure, forms are usually supplied with a cardboard separator.
Carbonless paper is available in multiple colors—white, pink/red, blue, and green—to clearly distinguish between original documents and copies.
Clear and durable image reproduction with sharp, vivid handwriting
Long image stability, with text and images preserved for over 15 years
Anti-tampering properties, reducing alteration and counterfeiting risks
Clean handling, with no ink transfer to hands, clothing, or surrounding papers
Smooth surface and high paper strength, stronger than standard 28gsm colored paper
Multiple color options for easy document identification
Safe and environmentally responsible, free from harmful raw materials or odorsApplications of Carbonless Paper (NCR Paper)
Thanks to its reliability and convenience, carbonless paper is widely used across multiple industries, including:
Invoices and billing forms
Receipts and receipt rolls
Its combination of clarity, durability, and cleanliness makes NCR paper a preferred solution for high-frequency, multi-copy documentation.
Bank statements and financial documents
Business forms and delivery notes
ATM and transaction records
Quality control and inspection forms

1. What is the difference between NCR paper and carbon paper?
NCR paper does not require a separate carbon sheet. Image transfer occurs through a chemical reaction under pressure, making it cleaner, more efficient, and easier to use.
2. How many copies can carbonless paper produce?
Carbonless paper is commonly available in 2-part, 3-part, 4-part, and 5-part configurations, depending on the application.
3. Is NCR paper compatible with printers?
Yes. NCR paper can be used with dot matrix printers, impact printers, and some laser printers, provided the paper specifications match the printer requirements.
4. How long does the printed or written image last?
Under proper storage conditions, the developed image can last over 15 years without significant fading.
5. Does carbonless paper contain harmful chemicals?
Modern NCR paper is produced using safe, non-toxic materials, free from strong odors and hazardous substances, making it suitable for office and commercial use.
