Carbonless paper is coated with two different types of chemicals: CF or also known as front coating, and CB or back coating. The chemicals are held in tiny capsules that are released when the capsules rupture due to pressure from a pen or printer.
Carbonless carbon paper has two coatings: the CF layer with a developer and the CB layer with a color former. The color former is a special type of colorless dye that is dissolved in a non-volatile carrier oil and wrapped in microcapsules of a few microns. The impact force of writing and printing can break the microcapsules, causing the colorless dye solution to flow out and contact the developer, producing a chemical change to present colored images and texts, thereby achieving the purpose of writing. Because this paper produces images without copying, it is called "carbonless paper."
