Carbonless Paper: Working Principle and Applications

Working Principle:

Carbonless paper (also called NCR paper, from No Carbon Required) enables duplicate writing or printing without using traditional carbon sheets. It relies on chemically coated layers that react under pressure to produce copies.

• Multi-part Structure: Typically consists of two or more sheets:

  • CB (Coated Back) Sheet: The top sheet, coated with micro-encapsulated dye on the back.

  • CF (Coated Front) Sheet: The bottom sheet, coated with a reactive clay or polymer that develops color when exposed to the dye.

  • CFB (Coated Front & Back) Sheet: Middle sheets (if used) have both coatings to transfer impressions to subsequent layers.

• How It Works: When pressure is applied (e.g., writing or printing), the microcapsules on the CB sheet rupture, releasing dye that reacts with the CF sheet’s coating, creating a visible mark.

Applications:

Carbonless paper is widely used in scenarios requiring quick, clean duplication:

1. Business Forms: Invoices, receipts, purchase orders, and delivery notes.

2. Legal & Administrative Documents: Contracts, work orders, and triplicate forms.

3. Medical & Laboratory Use: Prescription pads, lab test records.

4. Retail & Logistics: Shipping manifests, packing slips.

5. General Office Use: Notepads, memos, and duplicate checks.

Its advantages include no smudging, no need for carbon sheets, and efficient multi-copy record-keeping. However, digital alternatives (like electronic forms) have reduced its usage in some sectors.
